About the author

Daniel Ford has spent a lifetime studying and writing about the wars of the past hundred years, from Ireland's war of liberation to America's invasions of Iraq and Afghanistan. A U.S. Army veteran and a reporter in Vietnam, he wrote the novel that was filmed as 'Go Tell the Spartans', starring Burt Lancaster. As a historian, he is best known for his prize-winning study of the American Volunteer Group--the gallant 'Flying Tigers' of the Second World War. Most recently, he has written a memoir of his life so far: "Looking Back From Ninety: The Depression, the War, and the Good Life that Followed." - Reviewed in the United States on June 17, 2013Nice reading about the gentle world of recreational flight. The pilot sets an excellent example, learning in a tail wheel aircraft, learning aerobatics and practicing bush pilot techniques. While Mr. Ford started flying at the age of 66 he takes it seriously and has gone about it the right way, developing skills and building competency. I wish that every pilot would take it as seriously as does the author.
- Reviewed in the United States on December 25, 2013As a 66 yr old, licensed pilot who has not flown for 6 or 7 years I had been contemplating a return to the sky. Reading Mr Ford's account of flying, in the very type of plane I had always wanted to own and fly, has motivated me to get serious about it and stop the procrastinating.
To night (Christmas eve 2013) I called my old flight instructor for recommendations on where I might find a Cub and an instructor. Maybe, with a little luck, by spring I'll be back in the sky
- Reviewed in the United States on January 25, 2016I did not realize this was basically a collection of a few essays, and not really a full-length book. Probably my fault for not reading the reviews carefully enough. Overall, it's reasonably well written, just not very inspiring. After reading several "rave" reviews, I was expecting a lot more, so I guess I was just left with a feeling of disappointment. It was a decent read, for the 30 minutes it took me to read it...
- Reviewed in the United States on May 2, 2020We must keep trying new things and have new exoeriences. Maybe he could try ride along with the commemorative air force. I have and have enjoyed each plsne.....including a 1947 J3 Naval trainer
- Reviewed in the United States on December 28, 2013As an experienced GA pilot with a couple hundred hours in a classic J-3 Cub, I found myself re-living early years at my home grass strip flying a cub. There is no aircraft with the hands on feel of a cub, and Taildragger Tales brought the experience back to life. Recommended reading for any pilot that has ever flown a classic.
- Reviewed in the United States on February 7, 2018The author is a polished writer and he takes the reader along as late in life he finally learns how to fly a Piper Cub. You don't have to be a pilot, or want to become a pilot to enjoy this story. All it takes is a sense of adventure.
- Reviewed in the United States on October 25, 2015Very nice collection of essays that shows the shear joy of learning to fly, no matter what you age. And to do so in a Piper Cub makes it even better.
- Reviewed in the United States on October 1, 2015I admire Mr. Ford for learning to fly in the late years of his life! I am encouraged that I have a few years left in me as well. I loved this book, it was short, but, to the point! It is an encouraging, often humorous read, I will come back to it and read it again!

Loved the way the story made you feel like you were sitting at a restaurant having coffee with him. A good read

5.0 out of 5 stars An honest and heart-warming collection of tales
This book echoed so many of my experiences in learning to fly and subsequent training and experiences it was delightful to read, and remember my past flights.
