Taildragger Tales: My Late-Blooming Romance with a Piper Cub and Her Younger Sisters Kindle Edition

4.1 out of 5 stars 118 ratings

Dan Ford learned to fly at the age when most men are well into retirement. In this short book, he tells how it was to have a flight instructor one-third his age, to make a Sentimental Journey to the Pennsylvania airport where the Piper Cub first saw the light of day, to practice spins and aerobatic turns in a Great Lakes biplane, flies low and slow in New Jersey, to make a leisurely tour around Lake Winnipesaukee and into his past, and to have a close encounter with the National Defense Emergency of September 11, 2001. A delightful read for anyone who ever dreamed of becoming a pilot. Revised edition October 2012. About 11,000 words (44 print pages). Updated 2015

Nice reading about the gentle world of recreational flight. The pilot sets an excellent example, learning in a tail wheel aircraft, learning aerobatics and practicing bush pilot techniques. While Mr. Ford started flying at the age of 66 he takes it seriously and has gone about it the right way, developing skills and building competency. I wish that every pilot would take it as seriously as does the author.

As a 66 yr old, licensed pilot who has not flown for 6 or 7 years I had been contemplating a return to the sky. Reading Mr Ford's account of flying, in the very type of plane I had always wanted to own and fly, has motivated me to get serious about it and stop the procrastinating.

To night (Christmas eve 2013) I called my old flight instructor for recommendations on where I might find a Cub and an instructor. Maybe, with a little luck, by spring I'll be back in the sky

I did not realize this was basically a collection of a few essays, and not really a full-length book. Probably my fault for not reading the reviews carefully enough. Overall, it's reasonably well written, just not very inspiring. After reading several "rave" reviews, I was expecting a lot more, so I guess I was just left with a feeling of disappointment. It was a decent read, for the 30 minutes it took me to read it...

As an experienced GA pilot with a couple hundred hours in a classic J-3 Cub, I found myself re-living early years at my home grass strip flying a cub. There is no aircraft with the hands on feel of a cub, and Taildragger Tales brought the experience back to life. Recommended reading for any pilot that has ever flown a classic.

The author is a polished writer and he takes the reader along as late in life he finally learns how to fly a Piper Cub. You don't have to be a pilot, or want to become a pilot to enjoy this story. All it takes is a sense of adventure.

Very nice collection of essays that shows the shear joy of learning to fly, no matter what you age. And to do so in a Piper Cub makes it even better.

I admire Mr. Ford for learning to fly in the late years of his life! I am encouraged that I have a few years left in me as well. I loved this book, it was short, but, to the point! It is an encouraging, often humorous read, I will come back to it and read it again!

This book echoed so many of my experiences in learning to fly and subsequent training and experiences it was delightful to read, and remember my past flights.
