The Secret of the Lost Pharaoh: An action-packed adventure with a shocking twist (Matthew Connor Adventure Series Book 2) Kindle Edition
Archaeologist and adventurer Matthew Connor has made a career of finding legends the world has all but forgotten. Though there’s one in particular that has fascinated him for years—the Emerald Tablets. Myth says that they possess the knowledge of the universe, allowing humankind to traverse Heaven and Earth, and have the power to bestow wealth and wisdom upon whoever possesses them. But if they fall into evil hands, it could cause a global disaster.
So when a former colleague stumbles across an ancient Egyptian hieroglyphic map that promises to lead to a pharaoh’s tomb and the Emerald Tablets, there’s no way he’s turning down her invitation to join the dig. He only has one stipulation: his best friends Robyn Garcia and Cal Myers come with him.
The road ahead isn’t going to be an easy one, and their shared dream of recovering the Emerald Tablets is being crushed at every turn. And just when they think it’s all over, they learn there are a few clues they have overlooked. But they’re no longer the only ones searching for the Tablets. Now, the fate of the world hangs in the balance, and soon they’ll find out that when it comes to hunting legends, they can’t trust anyone.

- Reviewed in the United States on January 13, 2024The Secret of the Lost Pharaoh is the second in the Matthew Conner Adventure series, but stand-alone as well. This is an interesting and compelling tale, told very well. We are again with Matthew Conner and his sidekicks Cal Myers and Robyn Garcia as they work alongside Matthew in an archeological dig in a remote Egyptian North desert, many many miles away from the Great Pyramid and others on the Nile, and containing the effects of an ancient Egyptian ruler that there is no previous information on. This would be almost unheard of in Egypt where everything is and has always been intensely documented as it transpires and there are few real surprises as these sites are more deeply explored. Well, that is not going to be a problem at this, the pyramid of one of the sons of the Pharaoh Khufu. Khufu and two of his nine sons also ruled ancient Egypt. They are all three resting at the Giza Pyramids. This son, one of the remaining seven, was interred in the North Desert but there is no record of him as ruling in the history books of that era. This is going to be a very interesting dig...
- Reviewed in the United States on March 20, 2025For all that I loved the grouping of main characters and knew the bad guys from the get-go, the ratio of whining, I want her and I want her but does she want me, the long, drawn-out will they or won't they, and one of the characters constant whining about how everything is to have the worst possible outcome? The parts that included the actual adventure, as that is the genre we are promised, were interesting and engaging, hence the 4th star.
- Reviewed in the United States on November 19, 2018Exotic Egyptian mummies, golden treasures, and world altering arcane knowledge set the tone for this Matthew Conner adventure. It's fast paced and enjoyable to the end. I must admit that I want to yell at our hero for being oblivious to Robyn Garcia's feelings of deep love, and for indulging in a passionate tryst with the hot Egyptologist, Alex. My heart went out to Cal too, regarding his conflicted relationship with Sophie. Overall, a fun ride.
- Reviewed in the United States on May 26, 2022The Secret of the Pharaoh seems to me to be more of a study in the emotional interactions of the characters than a fast paced adventure story. Seemingly every word and conversation was scrutinized for every possible meaning or inference or innuendo. Not only is it emotionally exhausting for the characters but also the reader. The author seems to want the emotional interactions to be the story instead of the actual story. As a result, this novel seems to be a soap opera set in exotic locations. Not what I was hoping for.
- Reviewed in the United States on April 1, 2023A fast-moving adventure with much bantering between three very close friends who treasure hunt together.
It was hard to put this book down as you always want to find out what happens next.
- Reviewed in the United States on September 6, 2019I was initially drawn to City of Gold, but I decided to read this one first, because it dovetailed nicely with a project I'm working on, also involving Egypt's Western Desert. Secret of the Lost Pharaoh is a well-researched, well-crafted mix of adventure, mystery, Egyptology, and ancient legends, with page-turning suspense, unexpected twists and a subtle undercurrent of romance. One thing I found mildly annoying, however, was Cal. For someone who lives for these adventures enough to put a relationship in jeopardy, he comes across as someone who probably shouldn't be there. Maybe Egyptian curses just give him the heebie-jeebies, and he'd be fine climbing the Himalayas. But I've got a feeling he'd be looking over his shoulder for a yeti. Maybe this is just PTSD from the events in the first book. I'll find out when I read City of Gold.
The other bugaboo for me was the unrealistically deep hole they manually dig with shovels. Even with loose, easy soil, for a hole this size, you'd probably bring in equipment such as a backhoe, finishing up with shovels as you near the archeological prize. And no mention is made of how they removed the excavated soil from the hole. At the very least, for safety's sake at this depth, you'd need shoring to keep the hole from collapsing in on itself. Does Egypt have an equivalent of OSHA? Our intrepid explorers are lucky they didn't entomb themselves deep below the desert sands.
That said, I really did enjoy this tale, and am looking forward to going back and reading City of Gold. This series looks to be a winner!
- Reviewed in the United States on May 15, 2018Intriguing and full of surprises with romance involved. Carolyn Arnold writes to keep your attention to see what will happen next. Love the characters and they work well together. I could not put down this book because it was so fascinating. I am sure you will enjoy it. Happy reading!
- Reviewed in the United States on May 30, 2021I really liked the premise of a lost pharaoh. Archeology fascinates me anyway, and, as we now know, there are many Egyptian secrets still buried. The characters are fairly well fleshed out, though not all. There are a few things that I would have loved to have been explored further. But otherwise, it is a great story.

Nothing much to say about the book; it is a good read but rather far fetched. Also quite easy to see where it was going.

3.0 out of 5 stars Story is compelling
This is the first book I have read by this author and I am surprised at all the accolades given to her. The story was well paced and the material apparently well researched but I would fire the editors for not catching overused words and excessive prose. There had to be almost 20 “smirks”. I will try another book by this author and hope that the writing is better.
