The Bugeater Lunch and Supper Club: If They Only Knew... The True Comedic Inside Story of the Mortgage Banking Industry in its Glory Days Paperback – May 7, 2024
Purchase options and add-ons
Mortgage loan clients of The Company sputtered these words:
“Isn’t this a mortgage company?!”
“Frankly, this whole thing has been like a Saturday Night Live episode.”
Can you relate?
Revealed for the first time, those who were in the thick of it are writing about the mysterious underbelly of the mortgage banking industry from the origination side. Like a comical set of stories from a corporate frat house, these unique, real-world vignettes of a mortgage lender will open your eyes. They are far from representing the behind-the-scenes shenanigans of some backwoods company with obscure mortgage brokers. The Company was the preeminent mortgage banking firm in Northern Virginia and Washington, DC, during the late 1980s to mid-1990s.
This book wipes the lipstick off the mortgage banking industry while answering the question borrowers wonder most about: Can I afford to buy a house? The American dream of homeownership – the most significant financial decision in the lives of many Americans – was entrusted to the hands of an infamous cast of characters, The Bugeater Lunch and Supper Club. How could this group, reminiscent of The Three Stooges, generate millions of dollars in revenue while carrying on like a bunch of frat guys on Spring Break?
The good folk who punched a clock and followed the rules while conforming to the corporate way of life will be astonished when they dig into this story. Readers who might question the reality of the events depicted herein will soon realize that nobody could make this up. Like Prohibition, this short-lived golden age of mortgage banking spawned in swindelous style cannot – and will never – happen again.

About the author

Rick Soper - An Irish Italian born in Boston on St. Patrick’s Day; Rick is true royalty. His passions run deep in rock ’n roll and sports. He watched the Celtics play at the Old Boston Garden as a kid. He was one of seven young men who received a scholarship to play basketball in Greece. His favorite rock ’n roll band is The Rolling Stones, and his knowledge of the band is encyclopedic.
Rick was in the crowd of 600,000 in 1973 at the famous Summer Jam at Watkins Glen that featured The Allman Brothers Band, Grateful Dead, and The Band. These days, Rick is most likely to be found at the beach, vodka tonic in hand, or watching a vintage spaghetti western. Rick’s loving and driven dedication to memorializing the unbelievable antics that occurred every day at The Company resulted in the book you are holding in your hands. For decades, he declared, “We gotta write a book someday!” With Rick’s rich Boston accent and deep voice, we’re looking forward to getting him lots of voice-over work.

- Reviewed in the United States on May 30, 2024Format: KindleVerified PurchaseIn today's working environment of downsized virtual offices, work from home and online
banking processes, it is gratifying to read the author's experiences and how they
skillfully capture and remind us of the brick-and-mortar front office environment that we
all remember from the 70s to the mid - 2000s and how their experiences and comradery
exude how basic workplace human interactions shaped an entire Mortgage Lending
Industry. Educational and inspiring yet extremely hilarious in explaining the multitude of
people and personalities that made the Loan Approval Process more subjective than
objective from application to settlement. As a Realtor from the late 90s to the present
and with 100s of transactions completed, I experienced a few bits and pieces of what
actually took place behind that Morgage Company front lobby curtain as I was rarely
invited to the back offices where the Company’s "real work" was taking place.
A must read for anyone in the Real Estate Business / Industry which sheds a humorous
light on the many aspects that always resulted in our gallant efforts to explain to
inquiring Clients questions such as the “ loan origination process, loan commitment and
final loan approval, the appraisal process, underwriting and the real estate Agent’s
duties.” Little did I know after Bugeater review, I was only scratching the surface on
explaining things or realizing the difficult tasks of understanding enough to explain the
entire process. A must read to understand…..what it means What do you mean that
"we lost direct endorsement?" What do you mean “Clear to Close But…” What does
the Underwriter want or it is in Underwriting for review. Have you ever met an
Underwriter? The Company was the right vision at the right time and
this book will surely make their success in this industry entirely clear to you.

- Reviewed in the United States on July 15, 2024Format: HardcoverVerified PurchaseWhile I’ve never worked in the mortgage industry, I have bought a house and the shenanigans in this book made me laugh and roll my eyes thinking about what was going on behind closed doors during what is arguably the biggest financial decision of peoples lives. The stories reminded me of a milder Wolf of Wallstreet meets the Office. With prank after prank that would make Jim Halpert proud. The cast of characters will keep you entertained and you might even learn a thing or two like me about the ins and outs of the mortgage process. Definitely worth a read!
- Reviewed in the United States on May 27, 2024Format: KindleVerified PurchaseThe book provides a humorous reflection on the way business was done in the mortgage banking industry. I would recommend it to anyone who has purchased real estate. I think the authors have done a very good job of defining some of the facts about the industry in a humorous way so that most anybody can understand the business and enjoy the humor behind the message that the authors are conveying that this was the way things were done.

- Reviewed in the United States on May 27, 2024Format: KindleFound the nicknames given to many of the characters in the book to be very reminiscent of Damon Runyon’s characters—always a successful and humorous formula.
Loved the awards given out annually to the Bugeaters. Company awards are in most cases given to employees who have displayed exemplary work not, however in these pages. While some of the awards sounded impressive in their titles, appearing to reward excellence, they are anything but. They were awarded for what most people would consider to be less than exemplary work— rewarding laziness, unprofessionalism, selfishness and uncaring. Yet the recipients treated these awards like a badge of honor—dysfunctional to say the least.
As a lawyer who spent years working for the SEC’s division of enforcement, I encountered many instances of skulduggery practiced by individuals with varied backgrounds and education, many with Ivy League pedigree. One of the many lessons learned was that background and education do not define a person. Those that act with indifference and deceit towards others (in the context of the business world)usually have money as their motivation—the benchmark being the degree of indifference. To what degree the Bugeaters fall into will surely be an interesting read.
The first couple of chapters have some humorous anecdotes — a prelude to what surely follows.

Format: KindleVerified PurchaseEarl, Eddie & The Reverend tell it like it was. It is a great book that should be read by everyone in the real estate industry and anyone who has had or plans to have a mortgage loan. The stories are extremely funny but true & accurate. This is a one of a kind book describing a world that has never before been written about. I can't wait until these experiences are made into a movie or TV series. Fantastic work boys!
