So we get 56 poems herein that cover themes of nature, stolen time, lack of love, maturity, the hollowness of loss, isolation, and soon we move into the awareness of the decline of civilization that comes with loneliness and remote disconnect with the status quo of living. There is much made of betrayal in love and the stress and disappointment that comes with it. Profound is this mourning and sadness with many of the poems, which give them a bit of the feel of the classics throughout our human history. There is this longing to return to wholeness in the stars. The final set of poems seem to allude to some grand awakening taking place where everything is brought to justice for balance and truth. Something that I believe is happening right now. All of this makes for an interesting read as enough of the soul of the author comes through with a fascinating heaviness and honesty without making one feel uncomfortable, yet keeping a good edginess to the prose. The poems exude with intelligent emotion, description and lean toward a spiritual tone of the wisdom that there is a great truth to be sought, even embraced as the beginning of the revolutions of our existence and our purpose. The poems have a mystical lean, the only downside is the handful that made little sense, yet sounded terrific, that same handful I seem to find in every poetry book. These are thought provoking, personal, and filled with a haunted longing for righteous commonality both here on earth, and in that eventual return to the Source, which is all the same. Hallelujah!
- Reviewed in the United States on July 6, 2018Format: PaperbackWendy E. Slater has done it again! Like a surgeon with a scalpel, Wendy masterfully slices through the tough shell of the human experience, to discover what resides deep within. Piercing through tissue, muscle and bone, Wendy’s words get to the heart of the matter – where we feel everything the human experience has to offer: pain, humiliation, shame, sorrow, separation, ecstasy, intimacy, passion, wonder, love and joy. Pointed and raw, Wendy’s words force the reader to confront what is real. It is for this reason that I love Wendy’s work! Thank you Wendy for another masterpiece! As always, I look forward to your next release!
- Reviewed in the United States on June 30, 2019Format: PaperbackI've read Wendy E. Slater's poetry before and what always strikes me about her work is the beautiful and articulate language and also the depth of emothion. I probably would read anything and everything by this sublime poet. I read some of her work before I begin writing my own poetry--it gives me balance and rythm. Fabulous work!
