The gripping, emotional historical saga from TOP 50 bestselling author of The Orphan in the Peacock Shawl, AnneMarie Brear

Can her rebellious spirit ever be tamed?

Yorkshire 1860

With the heat of their beloved India far behind them, Evie Davenport and her widowed British Army officer father, are starting a new life in England. But Evie is struggling. With her dearest mother gone, Yorkshire with its cold, damp countryside and strict societal rules makes Evie feel suffocated and alone.

Her friendship with Sophie Bellingham, the gently reared daughter of a wealthy rail baron, is Evie’s only comfort. Until the arrival of local cotton mill owner, Alexander Lucas.

Newly returned from America, it is expected Alexander will marry and finally make England his home. And Sophie with her family connections and polite manners is the obvious choice.

But when Alexander meets Evie, a simmering passion ignites between them. Evie, with her rebellious spirit is like no other woman Alex has ever met, but to reject Sophie for Evie would cause a scandal and devastate everyone Evie loves.

Evie knows she must do her duty. But in doing so faces the unbearable future of being without the man she loves.

A sweeping historical saga that charts a course for following one's heart. Ideal for fans of Dilly Court, Rosie Goodwin and Rita Bradshaw.

Hello!

A big thank you for looking at my books. I write historical sagas set in Yorkshire, England and sometimes in Australia.

My main characters are strong and independent, and must bravely over come the obstacles and problems thrown their way. My female characters are spirited, loyal and resolute but also loving and considerate. They’re a good match for any man worth his salt!

I’m a storyteller, so to give people hours of escape and reading pleasure both makes me happy and inspires me to keep writing stories that readers love.

Take care,

AnneMarie Brear

"Poignant, powerful and searingly emotional, AnneMarie Brear stands shoulder to shoulder with the finest works by some of the genre’s greatest writers such as Catherine Cookson, Audrey Howard and Rosamunde Pilcher." Amazon reviewer.

Author of over thirty-five novels, AnneMarie Brear has crafted sweeping historical fiction with atmosphere, emotion, and drama aplenty that will surely satisfy any fan of the genre. AnneMarie was born in a small town in N.S.W. Australia, to English parents from Yorkshire, and is the youngest of five children. From an early age she loved reading, working her way through the Enid Blyton stories, before moving onto Catherine Cookson’s novels as a teenager.

Living in England during the 1980s and more recently, AnneMarie developed a love of history from visiting grand old English houses and this grew into a fascination with what may have happened behind their walls over their long existence. Her enjoyment of visiting old country estates and castles when travelling and, her interest in genealogy and researching her family tree, has been put to good use, providing backgrounds and names for her historical novels which are mainly set in Yorkshire or Australia between Victorian times and WWII.

A long and winding road to publication led to her first novel being published in 2006.

She has now published over thirty-five historical family saga novels, becoming an Amazon best seller and with her novel, The Slum Angel, winning a gold medal at the USA Reader's Favourite International Awards. Two of her books have been nominated for the Romance Writer’s Australia Ruby Award and the USA In’dtale Magazine Rone award and recently she has been nominated twice as a finalist for the UK RNA RONA Awards.

This book was a great read. It had a good plot line, sympathetic characters, and a great location. I also appreciated the fact there was no sex in it. There were passionate kisses, but that's it! Yay!

I have a love for historical books.  If it is based in Great Britain, I love it even more.  I was thrilled getting the ability to read this book by Annemarie Brear.

Sophie was willing to give up her happiness for others.  She was the Soldier's Daughter.  She was determined to carry on through the toughest time.

I really enjoyed the story.  I thought Sophie made a few poor decisions that nearly cost her her life.

I recommend the book.  It was a page turner.

The H & h are not the typical people of this time. The H has made his own way with cotton mills in England while the h was raised in India. So each is a free thinker & not completely accepted by their society. Most of the other characters follow the expectations of society & are comfortable seeing those who don't conform as less (the hammer pounding down nails to appear alike applies). It was refreshing to read of nonconformity & the h denies herself to support her friend to then be attacked cruelly by the same. There is a happy ending & the book flows well.

This book is not terrible. The writing style is not exemplary, but fine enough. However, the plot is a bit farfetched. The characters aren't particularly well-drawn. Sophie is a nitwit and selfish to the very end. Evie continually denies herself to the point of stupidity, making me wonder about Alexander's mental health and what he actually sees in her. The only thing the caricature of a villain is missing is a twirling black mustache. People die, crimes are committed, good triumphs over evil, and there's an HEA, so there's that, at least.

4 1/2 stars. This was an intense drama. It was mostly from Evie’s viewpoint, showing all the difficulties that she had to deal with. She didn’t always make the right decisions but she always tried to help others. There were sad and even tragic events, and some great characters, especially the ordinary folks. Evie was very fortunate that Alexander was persistent and forgiving. I would definitely read more from this author.

Starting a. New life in a place with so many rules. For Evie it was trying but meeting a man who brought out desires she thought she never wanted helped. Yo her best friend thought he was to be hers. The dilemma began.
