The Time Gatherer: Timegathering Book 2 (The Timegathering Series) Kindle Edition

4.4 out of 5 stars 93 ratings

Coming of age as a time traveler is tough, but when you're chased by assassins from the future, it’s worse. OUTLANDER meets HOW TO STOP TIME in this fantasy historical love story.

George St. James discovers his genetic gift for time traveling as a teenager, but when people start shooting arrows, he discovers he has enemies who want to change history for their own power. As George grows up to become a distinguished professor of history, he travels to study Renaissance Italy in person. Posing as a troubadour, he intends to meet the brilliant woman painter whose early death he’s researching.

But the moment Elisabetta Sirani opens her door, research is the last thing on George’s mind. He delivers a portrait commission but can’t stop looking into the dark eyes of this beautiful young woman. And she’s looking right back at the handsome singer on her doorstep.

As the head of her father's art studio, Elisabetta is forbidden to marry. But she’s intrigued and agrees to do the portrait if George will attend the sessions. Over weeks of meeting, they are drawn together. When Elisabetta suddenly falls desperately ill, George suspects his enemy’s poisonous hand.

He must save his beloved but could altering history erase him? He has to try.

From the Author

George St. James isn't your average adventure-seeking, hard-nosed character busting through time and chasing bad guys while seeking to right the wrongs of history. Well, he is busting through time, and he is being followed by bad guys. And he does wind up trying to change history for the better. But George is a guy with emotional depth. We get to step inside George's feelings, and he pays attention to them, in ways that aren't typical in time-travel science fiction. I was interested in George's decision to use his timegathering ability in a compassionate way, to help others.

After THE RENAISSANCE CLUB, I couldn't continue with more time travel stories featuring George without learning what motivates him, and how that motivation came to be. Once I went down that rabbit hole, I discovered a new world of genetic time traveling heritage, a eutopic 23rd century future, and a 13th century medieval monk who's a time travel mentor and trainer. I thought about how the future arises from the past, and how time travelers have to be careful of the Butterfly Effect -- one tiny thing rearranged changing humanity's future world.

Stay tuned for the next in the TIMEGATHERING SERIES.

Rachel Dacus is the author of seven novels and four poetry books. She writes about people who have the courage to love truly, dream their art, and aspire to improve their worlds. Her books feature women who brave conventions and dare to do the impossible.

The TIMEGATHERING SERIES propels modern-day characters into history to meet and help real historical figures, creating bonds and even love across the centuries. Each book is a standalone, and all are linked by a mysterious time travel tour guide, George St. James.

THE INVISIBLES is a family saga set on the beautiful coast of Italy, in cottage that's gently haunted by the spirit of a Romantic Era poet. The trilogy takes members of the Greene family through heartbreak, healing, and redemption, unknotting feuds and reclaiming lost siblings. Each book is a standalone story, though readers may prefer to read in sequence.

Readers say:

“Riveted from the start … well-plotted, character-driven novel.”

"“Rachel Dacus deftly crafts a unique and spellbinding twist to the time-traveling adventure."

"Her poetry sings and celebrates the body and spirit in form and function, freedom and flight."

She’s happiest reading, listening to music, growing roses, and walking in the foothills of the San Francisco Bay Area with her Silky Terrier and architect husband.

I read The Renaissance Club, so this was a fun way to step back and see what came before. But most delightful to me was the engaging tale the author wove around the short but productive life of the Baroque artist, Elisabetta Sirani. I also loved how the end of this book ties right into the beginning of The Renaissance Club. I don't think it matters what order you read these two books in. Either way, I think you'll find them both deliciously satisfying reads.

Though I am an adult of many years I enjoyed looking at life, love and time travel through the eyes of a young man.

The Timegatherer, the prequel novel to Rachel Dacus’ The Renaissance Club, is rather like The Time Traveler’s Wife meets Harry Potter and the Sorcerer's Stone. A rather ordinary young guy, George St. James, gradually discovers that he has the genetic ability to travel between points in time, and he must be trained in the safe and wise use of the ability, even as he forms attachments in the past and is pursued by an opponent from the future. His development in this regard seems unnatural, full of reaction dialogue and heavy-handed narration more fitting to an afterschool Very Special Episode than genuine character development; other characters fared only slightly better. Although it sticks to a few spots in medieval and Renaissance France and Italy, the novel does portray them in good detail and allows the female historical lead a real interior life.

Fans of time-traveling adventure will enjoy the glimpses of the past if they can look past the Eurocentrism and the more subtle cliches used to show the imagined future. If they want a deeper character study, however, just go for The Time Traveler's Wife itself.

I received an advance review copy for free, and I am leaving this review voluntarily.

Once George found he could jump in time he wanted to discover many things. He sometimes got into trouble but he had a servant a monk and a doctor all from different times to help him. As he finally became a man and married he had two children that also were time gatherers.

I love all-time travel fiction but I especially liked the unique take that this author used in this story. The character development was excellent as I got to see George's development from an immature and impulsive teenager to a compassionate and helpful person using his gift for good.

Aside from being bothered at the fact that a scientist would still be using lots of paper in technologically advanced 2298-2300, I loved everything else.

I received a complimentary copy and I am voluntarily reviewing it.

The Time Gatherer is a tale woven in different times, in different places yet all connected. Reading it was like a summer vacation in Winter. This is the second book in Rachel's Time Gathering Series. Take a break from COVID and life's stresses.... swim in the ocean of possibility. Enjoy
