Trick Play (Fake Boyfriend Book 2) Kindle Edition

4.5 out of 5 stars 6,821 ratings

Matt:

Want to know the fastest way to get screwed out of a football career? Get photographed in a compromising position in a gay bar. Yep, welcome to my life.

My agent says he can fix my image. He wants me to become the poster boy for gay football players. Me? I just want back on the field. I’ll do anything to play for the NFL again, even pretend to have a steady boyfriend. If only my fake boyfriend wasn’t Noah Huntington III—the most arrogant, entitled rich guy in the world.

Noah:

Pretend to be Matt Jackson’s boyfriend, my best friend said. It’ll be fun, he said. What Damon neglected to mention is Matt is surly and bitter. Being his boyfriend is a job in itself. From his paranoia over being constantly photographed to his aversion to PDA, being with Matt isn’t the care-free fake relationship I expected when I signed on to do this.

It’s supposed to be a win-win. I get to stick it to my politician dad who thinks no one is good enough for the Huntington name, and Matt’s reputation of being the bad boy of football dies.

What I don’t expect is to start caring for the guy. That’s not part of the plan. Then again, neither is fooling around with him.

Oops.

**Trick Play is a full-length MM novel with a HEA/HEA and no cliffhanger**

★★★★★ *Sigh* Matt. *Swoon* NOAH. If I could give this book more than five stars, I would. It had me laughing and swooning, scowling and crying, angry and ecstatic. I was basically on a roller coaster of emotions and when I got off, I wanted to get RIGHT back on again. It had just the right amount of sweet and steamy to keep you on your toes--Cait's Creatures.
★★★★★ FUN, SEXY, AND A MUST READ TO ALL THAT LOVE M/M BOOKS!
Absolutely Amazing! I can not brag about this book enough!--Dani's Book Review Blog

Fake romance becoming real very quickly
Trick Play might be one of my favourites from the series. Though, all are my favourites becasue I just adore all the characters and feel all the emotions in the stories. Matt and Noah's story is a classic Fake Boyfreind trope with a realtionship set up to clear Matt's bad rep after he was forced out of the closet by an unfortunate photo in a gay club. Noah is volunteered to be his happy boyfriend for a few months to clear his image and get Matt a contract after he was let loose from his previous team. Matt's stroy is first mentioned in Fake Out when he's introduced as Maddox's ex-roommate who he fooled around with in freshman year. And he appears for a little while when Maddox goes to be his friend after his story broke and introduces him to Damon to get a new manager for him. Noah also appears in the first book as Damon's close friend and an entitled, rich guy. Noah enters the fake realtionship out of spite for his father while Matt agrees to save his football career. They are NOT fond of each other at the beginning as Matt is angry and sad because of his situation while Noah is his usual obnoxious, easygoing and rudely honest self. But while they get to know each other and see behind the walls the other's created to protect them form heartache and failure they slowly fall for each other. They also have scorching hot chemistry from the beginning so that helps too. Yes, the romance is great in this one as expected but it also deals with some serious topics in politics and the sport industry. Matt is let go from his team because of the nature of his coming out but also probably the fact that he's gay. (Not representing real circumstances in the NFL today). His pushed into the limelight as the first out NFL player and his lovelife is in the news for everyone to see. He's also from a southern, very conservative and not accepting at all family who he still tries to help even after he was basically disowned and thrown out. His story is very sad but we can learn a lot about strength and goodness from it. Noah, who everyone sees as a rich, entitled d*ckhead, is hiding behind thick and tall walls of self-preservation to protect his heart from being broken again by people who love his money, his reputation and his connections more than him. It really shows in the story that being born on the right side of money is not always easy and there are lots of pain and manipulation behind. It was really sweet how Matt slowly broke down his walls and sneaked into his heart. The amount of angst was perfect, the sweetness and hotness was in right proportions and the love was off the charts. I adore this series because all the books in it is so intertwined that our favourites from the other books pop up from time to time, and we also get introduced to future main characters early on. This series and this book is just perfection for me.

This is the second book in a series, but works perfectly well as a standalone... although if I can make a suggestion, I would actually recommend to read them in order :) that way you can have a better background about the main characters of this book, because we met them in the previous story :) and the same can be said about the future sequels, cause let's just say we meet quite a few interesting characters in this one as well ;) but more about that in a second... first, let me share a few more details about the plot of this book :)

Like I said before, we met both of the main heroes in the previous story... Matt is a football player who was outed as gay against his will and now is dealing with some serious consequences... to help him secure a new contract his new agent Damon, who may sound familiar, because he was the hero of the first book ;) suggests a fake boyfriend :) Matt reluctantly agrees... enters Noah... or to be more precise Noah Huntington the third or something like that... ;) son of a politician who may be a strong contender for moving to the White House in the future... Noah agrees to help mostly to frustrate his father... as you can guess they don't have the best relationship... and just like with the previous book, the fake relationship turns into something very real... :) I probably could tell you a few more details about the start of this story, but to be honest, I think it will be better if you get into it without them... then you can get surprised in a few more places ;) ok, now let's get into all the praises I have to say about this installment :)

As much as I adored the first book, I think I loved this one even more :) which surprised me actually, cause I did not expect all those feels to flood my poor unsuspecting heart... :) first of all, both main characters were so much better than I expected... Noah especially... who knew that under all that sarcastic and laid back attitude is someone who hides such a vulnerable side of him from the world... I swear, there were times when I just wanted to reach into the story and hug him... and don't even get me started about Matt... the more I got to know about him and his story, the more I fell for him... his family situation, how he was outed as gay, all the tough conseuences he now faces every day... *sighs* he's not exactly happy with Damon's "fake boyfriend" idea, but is willing to try anything that might help his situation... plus, he doesn't have the best opinion about Noah... the same can be said in reverse... Matt doesn't make the best first impression on Noah as well... :) so to see them getting to know more about each other... see those hidden sides... and fall slowly more and more into one another was... *sighs happily* I loved every chapter of it :) besides the absolutely adorable main couple, we have quite a few secondary characters as well... not only there are a few appearances of the couple from the first book, but we also get introduced to a few future heroes... and I have a feeling that I might fall for them even more than I already did with the stories from this series so far :) the writing style is just as good as it was in the first installment, if not a bit better :) just as I did with the first book, I listened to the audiobook version, and the same narrators did an even better job bringing these duo to life :) another 5 stars story that I highly recommend to you all :) I am definitely adding the future installments of this series, as well as any other books written by Eden Finley, to my #Wishlist, cause her entertaining writing style is definitely something to look for in stories ;)

Trick Play is a compelling and emotional romance that goes far beyond the typical fake-dating trope. Eden Finley delivers a story that not only captures the magic of opposites attracting but also touches on deeper, more intense themes with sensitivity and heart.

The two main characters couldn’t be more different, and that’s exactly what makes their chemistry so powerful. What starts as a fake relationship quickly turns into something neither of them expected. Their journey is full of vulnerability, hesitation, and ultimately, healing. Both men carry emotional scars from their pasts, making them wary of trust and love—but watching them slowly break down their walls and fall for each other is deeply rewarding.

What I loved most is how they were there for each other even before they fully understood their own feelings. It’s a beautiful portrayal of choosing someone not because it’s easy, but because it’s right. Their connection grows naturally, and by the time they realize they’re in love, so has the reader—completely and wholeheartedly.

This story is equal parts sweet, intense, and heartwarming. I absolutely loved these two together and highly recommend Trick Play to anyone who loves emotional depth with their romance and characters who find strength in each other when they least expect it.

Despite what some of the reviews say, i had my doubts about this because of how Noah rubbed me the wrong way in the last book BUT I enjoyed every little thing about their story in this book!!

For Maddox to be outed the way he had was freaking rough and I don’t blame him for being the way he was. While Noah, being the spoilt little brat that he was made out to be, had layers of hurt and heartache making both of them vulnerable and not wanting to love others very easy.

I enjoyed how this story played out and could not fault the story line. Nothing about it was thrown in on a whim making it come out choppy, everything was placed perfectly. From their personal fears and emotions to how they connected with each other and not even to have to say a word to know how the other one truly felt.

The added parts were having JJ come into the book which was a important part in the book. He helped them both in so many ways and was just adorable!!

I enjoyed the scene of Talon walking in on them in the hotel room and gets me excited to read Blindsided!!

    100% worth reading 👏🏼👏🏼

I just love this one, Matt and Noah’s story is just beautiful !! Matt was outed in the worst way possible, to save his football career, his agent (Damon) organises a PR stunt with his friend Noah to be Matt’s fake boyfriend. If Matt is in love and not available, the fact that he’s gay should not be taken into account compared to his stats ! Their débute is difficult, Matt is angry at his situation, he lives and breathes football, meanwhile, Noah does it to piss off his dad. But, from the moment they really start learning about each other, they discover that there is maybe more to this fake relationship than they thought at the beginning. They’re a perfect couple in this series, their love is beautiful 😍
