1960s Brighton, England... Crime reporter Colin Crampton won’t get extra time when he races to stop a killing at the World Cup Final.

★★★★★ “Another good book with Colin and shirley . Each book gets better. Waiting for the next. Well worth reading if you haven't yet read the series. Five stars to Peter Bertram for such enjoyable books.”

The murder with a hidden motive.
A secret conspiracy behind the killing.
A crime reporter chasing a scoop.

It’s July 1966 – and England is football crazy as fans cheer their team on to win the World Cup. There are millions who’d kill for a ticket to the final in London’s Wembley Stadium. Then café owner Sergio Parisi is found murdered in his own kitchen – and his World Cup Final ticket missing.

As Evening Chronicle crime reporter Colin Crampton chases down the story, he finds a link to the theft of the World Cup’s Jules Rimet trophy. And Colin has a race against time to prevent an even deadlier crime.

As always Crampton is in the thick of danger! On a romantic trip where Collin plans to ask Shirley to marry him, they instead rescue an abused mafia wife. Soon Collin is a marked man as he has humiliated a mafia family heir by stealing his wife away! In addition, the rescued wife's father has been murdered in England which leads Collin on a wild chase of illegal activities, an additional murder, a kidnapping with intent to kill, a secret covert foreign agent, and ends with Collin looking down the barrels of two different enemy guns! How will he escape this time? Will Shirley be widowed before she is even married?

5.0 out of 5 stars 1966 and all that...

The World Cup Mystery - Kindle edition. Brighton's ace reporter Colin Crampton, on the verge of proposing to long time girlfriend Shirl in a suitably romantic setting, gets caught up in saving a damsel in distress. That delays the prospects of marriage but kick-starts a ripping yarn that reaches its climax as the famous World Cup of 1966 is well under way and racing on a knife edge towards the final whistle.
The plot is complex enough, but author Peter Bartram ingeniously slips in further distractions for the reporter hero. Once you start reading The World Cup Mystery, prepare to burn the midnight oil.

I really like a book series with a continuity of the main characters. Character descriptions can be very comical, the storyline usually intriguing and brilliant and I particularly love the scrapes Colin’s landlady gets herself in in each book.
    Overall a very enjoyable read.

I enjoy a story where the the lead characters are likeable and that’s the case here. It was a bit different reading a crime novel set in the 60’s. I intend to read more in this series.
