Few scenarios encourage a sense of dread and impending, violent death than a good tale of a zombie apocalypse. And while some people would gladly accept an invasion of flesh-eating, crazed, and blind half-dead soulless corpses for less traffic on the normally crowded Highway 101 in Sonoma County, you will not want to come across any zombies after reading Undead Ultra by Camille Picott.

Warnings of language aside, there’s plenty of love for family and friends in this story as shown in her longing for her late husband, her ultra-running friend Frederico, and her son Carter.  And after reading the first few paragraphs, you may want to make sure that you always carry a a bottle of hand sanitizer with you.

So Kate and Frederico make the ultra journey attempting to find  her son in Arcata, finding and losing friends in the process. I’ve ridden the Levi Leipheimer Gran Fondo six years (with my riding friend Todd, a physical therapist who has a daughter named Miranda, a small hamlet Kate visits near the end of the book), so I know Picott weaves an accurate guide book of travel knowledge and includes a handbook of information about ultra running. When Kate describes the death of her husband, I was instantly reminded of Pedro Ilic, a Fresno tennis icon who played on the Fresno State tennis team  and who died 1994 after falling and hitting his head while playing tennis.

Many reviewers are hoping for a sequel, including the narrator of the book, Gwendolyn E. Druyor. You need to get the excellent audiobook, which allowed me to string many tennis racquets while listening to the story.

My suggestion for a sequel: While on a training run, Kate finds a lost wallet and stash of love letters, returns them to the owner who is former Blue Angels pilot Lawrence Scott, who is grieving over the loss of his wife who perished in a wing suit accident in the Alps, and he is also conducting a personal and unauthorized search for people that survived the zombie infection, but are now indistinguishable from the normal population and still have the same appetite for human flesh, but are cunning and intelligent. and Lawrence thinks there may be a cure by communicating with the occupants of the UFOs that navy pilots encountered near San Diego, and the UFO aliens also offer to share their miniature nuclear fusion power devices, which allows the UFO ships unmatched speed but also world peace through unlimited energy availability, and the search encompasses travel around the world but includes Lawrence visiting his friends at Naval Air Station Lemoore and Naval Air Station Whidbey Island, and of course Lawrence is a triathlon athlete, tennis player, and ultra runner, while Kate, an only child, wants to help Lawrence with his work, is amazed when her mother offers the help of Kate’s six other uncles and aunts, each of which has an exceptional paranormal ability,  and when Kate looks deeply into Lawrence’s eyes, she sees a lost soul, possible soulmate, and maybe the glint of a zombie.

    Or not.

Cheryl Strayed hiked the Pacific Crest Trail in the book Wild to escape her personal pain, Kelly’s husband takes up tennis to assuage his grief over her death in the Amazon film 30-Love, and Kate runs ultra races for joy, therapy, and to find herself. Camille has a great relationship with her readers, and I received a free copy of the audiobook through her newsletter to her Touch (Sulan, Episode 4) book. But I can still genuinely say you will appreciate your time and have fun reading Undead Ultra.

I'm generally tough on "Zompoc" book ratings. This is my first 5 star that I've given to an author. This book zeroed in on parts of zompoc most authors leave out. Honestly after reading this book I feel a love for running developing in myself. Lol. The thoughts and places she had to dig deep in order to keep going, I myself have felt in my own life at times. It was very real. I feel I know her as a person. Maybe because she lives inside of anyone who's ever had to desperately push themselves beyond what was thought possible. The zombies are creepy and described beautifully. I love that you watch her turn into a bad ass right before your very eyes. I almost didn't read this book because it seemed so far fetched. Then I read the first page and got hooked. I literally Can't wait to read the next book. It had a great pace and developed characters. I am mad about Frederico. I love him in the book. Silently hoping he will be in the next. I recommend this book to any zompoc lovers. It was a fantastic ride.

The story was certainly different from any otherZompoc book that I’ve read.
It was interesting from the beginning and fast paced enough to keep me interested.
I loved the Northern California setting. The author did an amazing job setting a vivid atmosphere of the north coast country.
Kate was a worthy man character. One star deducted for Federico’s fate
Why do authors insist on writing such amazing wonderful, inspiring characters and then kill them off?
I understand that it is a zombie, apocalypse or post apocalypse or war stories or whatever stories that characters have to die, dying is part of living. But I wish I could find some amazing series where it’s only side and minor characters who get beat, bombed/thrashed, murdered, dusted and dead.
Still, I am a huge zombie apocalypse fiction fan and this story was pretty great.

It's hard to do something unique with a zombie book. There are the usual tropes and plot devices, and well-employed, they can be very effective in the hands a skilled writer. But what Camille Picott has done is truly unique.

I had never heard of Ultra Marathons before reading this book. Picott imparts enough knowledge to let people like me gain an appreciate of the sport, yet doesn't go overboard, which is a tricky balance to strike but strike it she does. The idea of running hundreds of miles to escape zombies and reach a loved one; I never would have thought of this in a million years, and it works. She also has her zombies display characteristics that I have not seen before, and it makes for unique challenges.

The characters are great! Kate is plucky, but grieving a recent loss. Her confidence in everything but running has been shaken. Again, Picott skillfully threads the needle of demonstrating Kate's shaken confidence without her becoming whiny. Frederico, her best friend and running partner, is great! He has his own demons and flaws, but a great counterpoint to Kate's intermittent lack of confidence in herself. They complement one another well, and are well-developed, multi-dimensional, real people. The obstacles they face are both universal and particular to running, and I was literally on the edge of my seat so many times, truly fearful of what would happen next. I was also impressed with Kate's determination.

There was only one thing that really bummed me out, and that's just because I am a particular kind of sucker. It worked in the context of the story, but I wish it had turned out differently. But it's not a detraction, just a harsher take on the apocalypse than I want. :-( The conclusion was very satisfying, and I'm looking forward to the next book and audiobook!

This book was an absolute delight to read. I really did love it. There is nothing like a good post-apocalypse zombie read to get you on the edge of your seat, and this book did its job well. The characters were great and a joy to follow. The main female, Kate, tells the story, and her best friend, Frederico, is beside her on their journey into the unknown to rescue her son and hopefully his daughter. This book totally held me throughout from the first page to the last. I would recommend it to my friends.

The premise of this one caught my eye. Not just another zombie book among a sea of others. The idea of an ultramarathoner running across the country to rescue her son from college during the apocalypse sounded like a lot of fun. The book didn't let me down. It was surprisingly character driven, delving into the lives of the two main characters. Their past heartaches were very relevant to their present struggles.

As a middle-aged parent, I identified with the idea of a the main characters, and their quest to do whatever it took to protect their kids. I was a big fan of the platonic but deeply loving friendship between Kate and Fredrico.

I'm very glad I took a chance on this one when it popped up on bookbub.
