Unshackled (The Irish of Philly) Kindle Edition

4.5 out of 5 stars 793 ratings

Standalone MM Mafia Romance Best Friend’s Father Age Play Hurt/Comfort
Unshackled spares no one, and along the way, you’ll get everything from high-speed car chases, secret meetings in the dark, and the rawest hours of grief, to strong family ties, humor, and unconditional love.

In the wake of the bloodiest war the Sons of Munster had seen in a long time, we were supposed to celebrate our victory and move on with our lives. I wanted to see my brothers-in-arms dance and drink way too much. I wanted to hear laughter and Irish music. Instead, we were a syndicate crushed by grief.

Shannon O’Shea had lost more than most, and every fiber of my being screamed at me to pull him from the depths of his despair. As the father of my best friend, he’d been there for me when my parents kicked me out for being gay. Now it was my turn. I had to find the answers. I had to rescue him.

The day he asked for a favor and demanded discretion, the plan unfolded before my eyes, and I couldn’t resist the temptation. No names, no faces. He wouldn’t know it was me in the darkness. At the same time, the shackles around my wrists tightened as old enemies slithered back out of the gutters of my city, and my brothers and I were once again on the warpath.

Romance Across the Spectrum.

I’m often awkwardly silent or, if the topic interests me, a chronic rambler. In other words, I can discuss writing forever and ever. Fiction, in particular. The love story—while a huge draw and constantly present—is secondary for me, because there’s so much more to writing romance fiction than just making two (or more) people fall in love and have hot sex.

There’s a world to build, characters to develop, interests to create, and a topic or two to research thoroughly.

Every book is a challenge for me, an opportunity to learn something new, and a puzzle to piece together. I want my characters to come to life, and the only way I know to do that is to give them substance—passions, history, goals, quirks, and strong opinions—and to let them evolve.

I want my men and women to be relatable. That means allowing room for everyday problems and, for lack of a better word, flaws. My characters will never be perfect.

Wait…this was supposed to be about me, not my writing.

I'm a writey person who loves to write. Always wanderlusting, twitterpating, kinking, cooking, baking, and geeking. There’s time for hockey and family, too. But mostly, I just love to write.

~Cara.

⚠️ Deals with and trigger warnings// Grief, severe depression, suicide ideation, murder, shootings, blood, light torture, slight drug use, smoking, drinking, very light age play, age gape ⚠️ DESCRIPTION: In the wake of the bloodiest war the Sons of Munster had seen in a long time, we were supposed to celebrate our victory and move on with our lives. I wanted to see my brothers-in-arms dance and drink way too much. I wanted to hear laughter and Irish music. Instead, we were a syndicate crushed by grief. At the same time, the shackles around my wrists tightened as old enemies slithered back out of the gutters of my city, and my brothers and I were once again on the warpath. -------- ☘️ “May the rebellion in your blood save you from their shackles." ☘️ Side note: Thank you so very much to Cara Dee and Eliza Rae for allowing me to experience being a ARC reader! Especially for one my favorite authors! It was an honor! 😭 And another thank you to Eliza for taking time out of your day to help be download the ARC 😅💞 So.... If I'm being honest, it took me a minute to vibe with the characters and storyline. But I've also not exactly been in the right head space this month due to some personal things going on in my life. And also, Kellan is a stubborn, Irish diva that was driving me up the wall for a good chunk of the story 😅😤 I swear, I so wanted to take one of his fancy ass suits and take it on a mudding trip - sorry not sorry 🤣🤷 But then I would've had to high tail it out of there because I would prefer to not have a bullet in my ass 🙄🤣 But Cara has some sort of sorcery where you can't help falling in love with her characters. 😅💗 She did a really spot on job at representing the weight of grieve and the battle with depression. It's not just something that magically disappears, no matter how many years may have passed. Depression is like a vast ocean; sometimes there are small waves that you can let roll off your back and others hit you like a tsunami and you have to fight not to drown. I felt both Shannon's emotional turmoil of trying to keep going in a world that's become so bleak and Kellan's desperate and heart wrenching need to try and rescue him. I understood Kellan's struggle all too well.... watching someone that you love and that's usually always a pillar of strength and reliability, be so broken that death sounds like the easier option. 😮‍💨 There was a certain part of the story that felt.... kind of unnecessary. I don't want to spill any major spoilers, so I'll just say the kinky shit that went on in the dark. 😅 I felt like the relationship would've developed just fine without that filler. 🤷 I loved Shannon and Kellan's dynamic and the way they slowly drew towards each other in a more intimate way. They balanced each other out and they equally took care of each other. Shannon helped Kellan allow himself to be more emotionally vulnerable and filled in all the empty places inside him. And Kellan loved and accepted all of Shannon, including his jagged and shattered pieces; and brought passion into his life, also. 💞 It wasn't as action-packed as I was expecting for a mafia romance. The action parts were more mild, especially compared to her Auction series. Though, the way Cara can outline a smart and in detail war strategy in her stories is slightly scary and ingenious. 😅👏💯✊ This isn't my favorite Cara book but I did enjoy it. I may not have fallen in love with the story but I did really like it. If you enjoy: snark, emotional messes, Irish Mafia and age gape, than I very much recommend this. That is all. ✌️🧡💚

I really fought with myself to put this one down and begin reading This Life I & II first, but after a few chapters I could not put it down.

Kellan's character had me pulled in from the moment he appeared in Deserted and I couldn't wait to finally read his story.

I loved every moment reading as their bond grew deeper and deeper. Kellan has been a part of Shan's life since he was a kid, admiring the older man and finding himself slowly developing feelings that he believed could never be more than one sided. Even so, Kellan cherished their relationship over his own feelings and would always be loyal. Shan's emotional rollercoaster was something that tore me inside, he lost the woman he loved so dearly, only to lose his son, and fell into such a heavy depression that everyone feared he'd never come out of. Kellan helped him come out of such a dark place so slowly and carefully and not once did it feel uncomfortable with the way the story worked.
When they do finally give in to the desire for each other, it's timed so nicely.
Shan's depression was also something I believe was just written so well, it showed how depression isn't something that can just go away all on its own or even with the biggest help. It can come back even in the happiest moments, and Kellan never once tried to force him to get better. Their story is one I'll revisit over and over again and can't wait to see their appearances in future books.

I really loved this book. I typically like this author a lot so I don’t know why I didn’t have any big expectations. But it was so good. I absolutely loved the main 2 characters. They were so alive and well developed with a full range of emotions and personalities, and their connection was so deep and engaging, and incredibly sexy. Lots of emotional depth that felt completely genuine, they both had lost a lot, especially Shannon, yet he remained such a stabilizing force for Kellen, even as he fell apart. And. Kellen’s care and irreverent humor, his combination of insecurity and confident competence, made him just as endearing. Loved the 2 together, despite some definite concerns I had about how things got started (even while loving all that taboo steaminess). I wouldn’t be surprised if this one end up in my list of treasures re-reads.

Overall a good read. I liked the build up of the relationship between the main characters. The loss felt real as well as the mourning process it felt real. However I felt like more on page intimacy was needed. They spent so much time together after they were officially together but we did not see them grow together. This author has a way of writing hard topics and I applaud her efforts to write about mental health. I liked the book enough to read the first book in this family. Overall good but not my favorite. Wanted a better connection.

Cara teased this story at the end of This Life II and I've been impatiently waiting for her to write it. The result is definitely worth the wait!

Cara's strength as an author is the people (not characters-people) she introduces her readers to and how easy it is to fall in love with them.

In this story, two men who have suffered devastating losses are able to see each other differently as they heal. The losses are ones we know of and share from previous works, but Unshackled makes the impact they have had on Shannon and Kellan so much sharper.

Their story touches on questions of family, loyalty, love, and self. It is an Irish mafia story, but it is really about family and what it means to be part of a family, not to mention how roles within that dynamic change and evolve.

There is sex and violence but the violence is limited and mostly "off page." The sex? It's smoking's hot but far from gratuitous.

I'll be reading this again while I wait for Cara Dee's next book!

So I couldn't put the kindle down. Really good story, love the humor, could hear the Irish brogue in my head as I read, no jarring writing to throw me out of the headspace. Just pure unadulterated delight.

The MC has a a forceful voice, so real it imprinted deeply with all the experiences and scenes. As a reader I was completely and pleasantly immersed in his head.

Cara Dee, you hit another TKO. Excellent story.

When I got to the end, the only thought was - how is it already finished?!

And the 2022 Best MC in M/M Romance goes to Kellan Ford. Cara has blown me away with this guy. Funny, made loyal, alpha with a sweet heart and an abiding love for one man - Shannon. I laughed, I cried, and laughed again and I’m ready to read it again right now. Cara remains one of my go tos, insta reads, and she has outdone herself. This one is right up there with If We Could Go Back as all time favorites. This story is written with such care and handles grief with loving mastery. A perfect balance of mafia badness, family, and romantic love. Absolutely adored it! ❤️❤️

This is the third book in Cara's Sons of Munster series. It's essentially a standalone but why would you not read This Life I & II. They are great stories.

There is an amazing chemistry between our 2 leads, Kellan & Shannon (Shan). Even though for the first half of the story Shan is kinda oblivious to it. As the story builds so does their relationship.

Cara is one of the best story tellers I've read. She inhabits her characters or maybe it the other way round. Whichever, Cara never shirks away from dealing with tough subjects or difficult emotions head on. Enveloping you completely in the lives of the characters.

Kellan’s telling of his story was… OMG… so good!

    Sooooo good!!!

    I loved him so much.

I loved his patience with Shan, his desire for Shan, even his sneakiness in getting his way with Shan! I loved that he had his own insecurities and was fragile in his own way.

Have I mentioned I loved him?

The whole story was so good, I loved the SoM turf wars storyline, I loved the supporting cast!

    So good!!!
