Where You'll Land Kindle Edition

4.3 out of 5 stars 49 ratings

After a bad breakup, I packed up my life and moved to Miami to study for my doctorate in psychology. I made one promise to myself: Do not get romantically involved while I was in school. I needed to heal.

And then Will Easton came into my life. He was warm and sweet and intelligent. And he got me. What I didn’t know was that Will was running from a tragedy of his own.

When you try to escape your past without confronting your emotions, you repeat those same past patterns over and over. And that’s just what happened to Will and me, along with a few others who got swept up into the storm that was our relationship. Then came the awful secret. The one that changed everything.

Sometimes the most painful relationships are the ones that help us grow into who we are and to find the love we had been searching for all along.

Which begs the question: Can we choose who we love?

If there's one thing of which you can be sure when you decide to read a book by Jacqueline Simon Gunn, it's that you will come away more enlightened about human relationships and why people think and act as they do. That's because Gunn is not just a writer...and a good one too by the way...but because she is a clinical psychologist. As her profile states, she is "fascinated by human behaviour" and her writing is a way to explore human nature. Explore is what she does through her protagonist, Alex, in Where You'll Land. Alex is studying psychology...of course...after ending several years of a relationship with Zach that didn't result in the hoped-for engagement ring. Her determination to steer clear of men is, however, severely tested once she meets Will, another psychology student with whom she feels a connection on a much deeper level. But in time, her relationship with Will becomes complicated by Will's own past experiences and her interactions with Will's friend, Jude. As the plot of Where You'll Land unfolds, Gunn explores the motivations and emotions of her key characters, clarifying as a therapist would what is really going on in their heads and why. Anyone currently going through romantic relationship issues would do well to read this book. It will get you thinking about how you are looking at your partner e.g. are you seeing your partner as he or she really is, or as you would like them to be? An honest answer to that question might pinpoint why the relationship is suffering. Gunn also drives home the concept that while we might love or be in love with someone, marrying that person is no guarantee of eternal bliss. In fact, as she wisely points out, when we come to know each other's vulnerabilities, the capacity for hurting each other is even greater. In the end, Alex and Will both recognize these truths. So does their love story have a happy ending? You'll need to read Where You'll Land to find out! - Readers' Favorite

I love the line the author wrote to open her book: "You should only fall in love with someone whose arms are open and strong enough to catch you."

That feeling you get when you truly love someone, but you're not sure if they love you back. That experience moving to a new city and developing new friendships. The sultry air of South Beach. Jacqueline Simon Gunn has done such a fine job capturing all those sensations and emotions in her latest book, by the time I was done reading it, I felt like I had actually lived it with Alex, the main character. Simon Gunn has succeeded in crafting an original spin on the "will they/won't they" scenario and brought it to a satisfying conclusion. She delivers a lively paced story inhabited by richly developed characters by doing what she does best: using her expertise in psychology to examine and ponder the motivations of each of the characters.

I like how she switches between first and third person, utilizing multiple points of view to tell her tale. Funny, moving and provocative, all in all I'd say her latest is a fully satisfying read.

An interesting story by an author who clearly has a few things to say about psychology and relationships! I enjoyed the well thought-out characters and general storyline of Alex and her romantic entanglements with Will and other characters. Dr. Gunn writes with a unique voice - the story reads almost like a diary entry much of the time, and I found myself craving a little less narration and more dialogue and action to move things along. There were many instances of Alex or other characters thinking a thought and then essentially repeating that aloud through dialogue - something that slowed down the pacing in a way that I didn't personally love.

So many readers will relate to a time in our lives where we had that first significant "adult" love, and the ways it taught us about ourselves as much as it did about the other person. I don't know that anyone wouldn't be able to connect to these characters and Alex's struggle on some level. If you enjoy the analysis part of budding romance- thinking of why we're attracted to each other and what holds us back from jumping into relationships- you'll really like this book.

Be warned, if you're a hardcore romance reader, the happy ending you expect is going to look a little different than you might anticipate...an interesting twist which actually kicks this book right out of the romance genre and into women's fiction. I'm not even sure if the author classified it as a romance, but that was my expectation as I began reading it. I won't spoil the ending for you here, but for me it was a really abrupt turn that didn't necessarily serve the story very well. Still, respect to the author for going for an unconventional conclusion.

Where You’ll Land, and other books by Dr. Gunn, are set apart by her genuine love for her characters and her gift of presentation that incorporates psychological perspectives into her stories without occluding romance – and love. As expected, Where You’ll Land introduces readers to mindful, introspective characters who struggle with personal flaws and difficult histories. Readers are privy to moments of insight that tease and frustrate, reassure and excite. The characters are highly relatable as they demonstrate the sometimes torturous, but important, growth processes that occur as we navigate in (and out) of relationships. I strongly recommend Where You’ll Land to readers from all preferences.

Once again, I’ve fallen in love with Jacqueline’s writing. Each chapter is full of emotion, drawing you into the lives of her characters. The book is well paced with well-developed characters. You follow Alex through her personal relationships as Jacqueline expertly explores more complex themes in her books using psychology. Jacqueline’s writing gets you thinking about your own life and the relationships within it. Her books are more of an insightful romance, than a traditional romance, and create a fantastic read.

If a book hasn’t caught my attention 37% into it, it’s not going to. I’m not sure what this book is about after reading a third of it. Supposedly a group of people enrolled in a doctorate program in psychology that happens to be in South Beach, Florida. For that to be the premise, there’s very little studying going on but a LOT of drinking and sex. These people are pretty messed up. No one works and everyone parties constantly. Not my graduate school experience. That’s not what it takes to get a Ph.D. In Psychology.

I was coming to the end of Where You’ll Land & I had to forget about bed & just keep reading. I found I related to Alex more than I would like to admit. I think we all have points in our lives that seem repetitious, almost deja-vu only the people involved change, not the story we are living. I love how Dr Gunn uses her ability as a writer and her knowledge of psychology to help us understand why we make the choices we do and how to effect change in our lives. This is a book worth reading & sharing with your friends.

I was enamoured with this story from the moment I began, as like all of Jacqueline's books.

The characters were interesting and the webs they weaved and then tangled themselves in compelled me to look deeper and analyze the situation. To realise that we are all subject of repeating behaviours that we said we wouldn't ever again.

Jacqueline articulated the characters in such a way that I felt as if I was standing in the room observing. The many twists, turns, hot and cringeworthy moments had me begging for more, and I'm thankful this is an ongoing series.

As always a exceptional job and brilliant read.

Review for Where You'll Land by Jacqueline Simon Gunn.

Essentially, this is a story about a love triangle. The main character, Alex, is a very beautiful and athletic woman, who moves to California to study psychology. She meets the good looking, but introvert, Will and the handsome, sexy, Jude.
Both Will and Alex are battling past demons - this brings them together, yet Will does not reveal his issues until later, when Alex is having a relationship with Jude - Ahh, lucky Alex!
Jacqueling is a psychotherapist herself; this is very evident in the way she writes her characters - they become real people, with very real issues that they work through.
You will follow the development and introspection of these people - I guarantee, thee will be ties when you really connect with something they are going through.
I have to say, there were points when I had to put the book down and take a breath because I got annoyed with Alex, sleeping with Will then Jude in the same day, Alex really?! But that is Jacqueline Simon Gunn's magic, she makes you care, feel and relate with her characters. A great write and great read.

This one brought tears to my eyes . I found so much of myself in it. I believe that humans are inherently good. It’s circumstances that make us behave otherwise and this book highlighted just that. It had such a deep understanding of love one I feel writers usually skim over. But this book by Jacqueline wasn’t afraid to take the plunge away from its amorous bliss. I would read it again.
