White Russian Jacqueline "Jack" Daniels Mysteries, Book 16 Audible Audiobook – Unabridged

4.2 out of 5 stars 1,368 ratings

Just when you get out...

Former Chicago cop Jack Daniels thought she'd left her former life behind. She'd traded her badge for a toddler, and her lifelong pursuit of heinous serial killers for a boring house in the suburbs.

...they pull you back in.

Then Jack sees some pictures. Pictures of men who were supposed to be dead. And once again, against the fierce insistence of her husband, Phineas Troutt, Jack reluctantly straps on her gun and goes hunting. Hunting for the worst of the worst.

This leads to a trek across the Great Plains, searching for a modern slavery ring, on a collision course with three of the most horrible villains Jack has ever faced.

But Jack, and her irritating buddy Harry McGlade, will face them, and much more. Because they're prepared to go to hell and back to rescue an old friend.

The trick will be getting back in one piece. And - spoiler alert - they don't.

What are you willing to lose?

OMG.... I always wait in tense anticipation for the next episode of the Jack Daniels series so there is no way I am ever going to give less than a 5 star review to Mr. Konrath. As mentioned previously, I typically hate these types of police thrillers, but Mr. Konrath creates such varied loveable heroes, heroines, and villains that I am salivating to read more. They are just too much fun. You’ve got suspense, adventure, comedy, and horror mixed up in one. This is my one reading vice.... I love to be entertained and whip through the pages. I always get that with this author. (BTW, Mr. Jack Kilborn..... I am also waiting in VERY tense anticipation, biting my nails to the quick, waiting for your next novel. Hurry up or the Cowboy will be extracting fingernails instead of teeth on my behalf)

The gang's (mostly) all here. McGlade talks Jack into "one last one" and she, questioning her judgement all the way, leaves Gil/Phineas and their daughter behind, gets into the Crimebago Duex, and off they go, Jack questioning her sanity with every mile.

Unbeknownst to either of them, riding along are little twin psychos posing as videographers. Boy, are they messed up, as shown in flash backs into them growing up.

Memories of the last book are brought up constantly. I swear I read all of this series but missed it. Downloaded and ready to catch up.

Memories of the psychos Jack and Herb have brought down are also recalled (with convenient links to the books on Amazon) are here. As we know, with Harry's assistance (Harry barely tolerated) they took down some really bad ones. Some of the worst being women. But the psychos (yes, more than usual this time) they are up against in this outing are truly whacked.

With the exception of not remembering the last book, this is exceptional, living up to the Konrath brand. The ending may leave a long time reader in tears, as it did me. Is there another Jack Daniels book coming? Only the author knows.

While this CAN be read as a stand alone book, new readers would be well advised to read others first.

Probably the best of the series. But I think that about all of them.

I continue to read this series because I’m invested in the characters, I guess. But as the series gets more gratuitous in its violence and the plots ever more implausible it becomes hard to enjoy. But I liked how Jack’s character evolved in this installment and there where some humorous moments that made me chuckle. I’m guessing as Konrath has continued to push the envelope it’s unlikely he will back off. But I would sure enjoy them more if he would return to the tone of the first 4 or 5 books in the series and leave the gore to his horror novels.

I have read over 20 of J.A. Konrath's "Jacqueline 'Jack' Daniels" crime thrillers and WHITE RUSSIAN is prolly my absolute fav, being as how I read it a few years back and just re-read it today: I had forgotten how truly great it is.

Konrath's "Jack Daniels" family of unique characters and his brilliant sense of humor never fails to disappoint.

    BRAVO!!!

Well if you like stupid you will like this book. This author is really going off the deep end...he does have an imagination.

I love Jack Daniels (the books, not so much the whiskey). They never disappoint, and White Russian is no exception. Kept me guessing and still managed to make me say "Wait..what?" Konrath definitely plumbs the depths of human depravity and his books are not for the squeamish, but he is a darn good writer and a better story teller, and he shows us the best side of humanity juxtaposed with the worst. Truly satisfying read.

J.A. Korath is my favorite author. He is obviously very intelligent with an amazing imagination. I like the continuous action with no unnecessary extra filler words. Don't like that he is disrepectful by using the Lord's name in vain but I so hope I meet him, his wife and family in the
afterlife (see you in heaven). I also enjoy his horror stories. My best loved characters are Woof and Mathison. I absolutely adore that he's so obviously in love with his wife.

This book isn't for anyone with a weak stomach. In many ways it's fairly well written but the contents are just sickening in many ways in how cruel and inhumane people can be. It should come with a warning like some TV shows about the contents containing violence that may offend some people.
