"The sparks fly...I swear the build-up between these two wasn't a slow burn; it wasn't fast either; it was like watching the lightning bolts power up Thor. I don't know how, but Nicole can work magic in these small towns, and I will never view North Dakota the same." - Trish, Reviewer

- Reviewed in the United States on November 2, 2024I wasn’t expecting to love this book as Weston was a minor character in the other books, and we hadn’t met Rachel yet. But, as always with Nicole’s books, it draws you in until you can’t wait to get to their HEA. West is a vet who came home from the Afghan war without his colleagues and with the horrors of war in nightmares, migraines, and a fall into alcohol to forget. As he’s working his way out, Rachel comes home from her internship at the Smithsonian to help out her grandmother who needed hip surgery. The two had been close friends and along with her brother had local adventures and endless jokes. For Rachel, West was her first love, but clearly he’s not the same, and he failed to write her as promised when he went off to the Army. The story unfolds, evil hits the town and the family, and Hercules the pig steals everyone’s attention. An excellent read!
- Reviewed in the United States on May 31, 2022I love Nicole Snow’s books and have read all her series, though I’m not a fan of the relationship drama that goes along with a couple staying apart because one doesn’t want to hurt the other, or they don’t think they’re good enough. I really struggled to get through the first 2/3 of the book. The Worst Best Friend is actually friends to lovers, but felt a lot like second chance too. It also started out a bit like enemies to lovers, which I usually like, but the characters said some really cruel things (coming from a place of hurt) and it didn’t have the witty banter that often goes with enemies to lovers, just hurtful words. If you do like second chance, this would be an excellent book for you.
Toward the end of the book it became more of what I enjoy about Nicole Snow books with romantic suspense elements and a strong ending.
- Reviewed in the United States on November 9, 2021Another great Dallas, North Dakota tale. When I review a book, I take notes. It never fails for a Snow book; one 8.5 X 11 sheet doesn’t do it…with narrow ruling! I love her books because they are about regular people finding themselves in bad and sometimes outrageous predicaments. Who would think a horse could win the day or in WORST BEST FRIEND, a pig?! Characters from previous books/series make a cameo which is always nice to “catch up” with them if you’ve read their book, but is not at all necessary in order to understand this book.
A former childhood friend but now a “damaged” adult, 27yo Weston McKnight welcomes home 23yo Rachel Simon or Shel in a most unusual way. Rachel hung out with West and her brother who were besties when they were kids. West was always very protective of her. When that protection takes a different turn, well, that’s the whole purpose of this story. Can they become more than friends?
The book is told in both points of view but you can definitely tell from the narrative which character is speaking. Ms. Snow does an excellent job of making her people unique on the page. There is LOTS of steam. You’ll need a fan in some scenes. There will be touching, poignant moments, funny moments, near-miss moments, painful moments, scary moments, aha! moments and beautiful moments. Wonderful and satisfying HEA. I’ll admit I cried at some events. I would give this book more than 5 stars if I could. I volunteered to review an ARC of this book. LOVED it. Perfect cover too…
- Reviewed in the United States on February 4, 2025Okay, this book is by far the best out of the for. I enjoyed it from the beginning. Something about the stubborn hard heads. No cheating, only HEA.
- Reviewed in the United States on June 25, 2022This author has plenty of books to her credit, but this isn't one of her best.
A couple of big problems: The main character, Rachel aka Shel, was clueless when it came to veterans' issues, and that just made her seem immature and selfish. She returns to her small town and reconnects with her childhood crush, Westin, who is now a hot but moody hunk ... who had a hellacious time in Afghanistan. Rather than trying to understand his issues, and respect his desire not to relive his experiences, she demanded he open up and share with her and became angry that he was holding back. Well, DUH! Honestly, I don't know any veterans who have seen the truly worst of war who want to talk about it, starting with my own brother and his time in Vietnam. It was about 20 years - literally - before he shared some of the experiences that haunted him. So West didn't want to share -- leave him alone, or at least be respectful and careful.
Next problem for me: TOO LONG. These two bickered over the same things over and over and over. In other books this author has droned on too long, too. It's like listening to a person telling a story who keeps repeating themself while telling it.
Also: Too much sex. She writes a good sex scene, but once they started they just didn't stop ... and it got boring.
What I liked, though:
=A good premise (spoiler alert) about a potential antiques swindler who comes to stay at Grandma's BnB. =Interesting details -- the icky almonds. The one good coat the dude always wore.
= The pig -- quite a character. Pigs are smart; are they THAT smart, though? In one place, i believe the author had someone pick up the pig. Nope, not buying that -- pigs are BIG and heavy and have hooves. You aren't going to pick up a grown hog, even if you're a big strong guy.
= Side characters: I like that the author involves characters from previous books and shares their interesting back stories. This book prompted me to pick up another of her books in this series.
= The town of Dallas, ND. The town itself is a character, although it is something of a fantasy town. Does the author have any experience in oil towns in North Dakota? I've been out there, and read a number of articles about the oil boom there, and many of those small towns exploded -- and not in the best way. Quick growth led to poor planning, crappy and expensive housing, higher crime, increased traffic. But no one wants to read about that kind of town, so just go along with the fantasy of the quaint small town and be good with it. And frankly, it was fun to read a book set in a state that rarely is mentioned!
So overall, there were cute parts to this book. The characters were likable but immature. The side characters were interesting and the details were good. The "mystery" part of the story wasn't bad but very predictable. The whole thing would have benefited from a solid edit -- as in, cut out the excess baggage, please. I kept wondering, "Are we there yet?"
- Reviewed in the United States on November 21, 2024Woww!! What a beautifuly delightful story ... all the good feels, and what a soulful war vet of an alpha hero main character. Our girl knew with all her heart from the get go that West was her soulmate and she was never going to let him go ... what an awesome amazing end to love story which took so many twisty turns to finally get to a happy ever after made in the stars

5.0 out of 5 stars Great story
Well then ...the drama is strong in this one. So much happening between these best friends. I love their story and exciting that happens to get them to their happily ever after!

5.0 out of 5 stars Weston's story is so worth the wait!
Yes! Absolutely loved the latest from Nicole Snow's Knights of Dallas series. This series has been a joy to read from start to finish, and I was waiting for Weston's story to top it all off. It did not disappoint. Weston and Rachel's journey is a complex but ultimately deeply satisfying one, where both characters learn to face their demons. The drama is top notch, which is to be expected from Nicole Snow, and the addition of animals is as usual hilarious. This time we have a pig as a major third character and he is marvellous. Well worth a read. Can't wait for more from Nicole Snow!

4.0 out of 5 stars Brothers Best Friend Small Town Romance
This was a great story. I’ve not had a chance to read the others in the series and definitely can be read as a stand-alone. Best friends brother, love the suspense that’s built in.
