About the author

John Baltisberger is an author of speculative and genre fiction that often focuses on Jewish Elements. Through his writing, he has explored themes of mysticism, faith, sin, and personal responsibility. He lives in Austin, TX with his wife and his daughter.
Though mostly known for his bizarre blend of Jewish mysticism and splatter, John defies being labeled under any one genre. His work has spanned extreme horror, urban fantasy, science fiction, cosmic horror, epic verse, and he has even written a guide for mindful meditation.
While relatively new to the writing community, (his first book was published in 2018) John has become known for his work in verse, having worked in both extremely short works and massive novella-length poetic epics. He continues to work to push himself to explore new avenues of expression and horror literature.

- Reviewed in the United States on August 24, 2021John Baltisberger takes everything great from Trief Magic and amplifies it with this sequel. As a result, Son of the Right Hand feels simultaneously more intimate and far more epic than the earlier installment in the story of Ze'ev.
Months after the intense conclusion of Trief Magic, Son of the Right Hand picks up after Ze'ev has had time to recuperate. With remnants of the cult scattered into the wind at the end of Trief Magic, Ze'ev has been hunting them down and bringing them to justice. As we follow Ze'ev into what he believes to be the hideout of the final members of the cult, he discovers something far more hideous and terrible than simply a couple of cultists.
Just when Ze'ev thinks he's earned a well-deserved break from the darkness, an old friend reaches out with terrible news of a gruesome tragedy. Time is running out as another girl has gone missing, and Ze'ev doesn't know if he can bear the weight of another failure. His struggle to do the right thing and bring his friend some closure brings him face-to-face with a monster from deep in the history of serial killer lore.
If that's not enough, the past isn't through with Ze'ev, as his superiors present him with what might be the greatest challenge he's faced so far. Sandy, the young woman he saved in the previous book--kicking off the events that nearly ended his life--is to be taken into his care. Her brief encounter with the darkness coexisting within our world has tainted her in the same way Ze'ev was tainted as a young man. Now, it's up to him to teach her how to navigate the world as she now recognizes it.
As everything collides in a tumultuous--and possibly fatal--climax, Ze'ev makes a deal that has consequences he may not be able to live with.
Fans of John's religious horror masterpiece, War of Dictates, will be pleased to see some crossover from characters in that epic poem as Ze'ev crosses the boundaries that separate our world from the worlds of the things that live in the shadows. That scene alone is worth the price of admission. If you haven't already read the Splatterpunk Award-nominated War of Dictates, then you need to address that shortcoming post haste.
Notable, within the narrative, we get to act as stand-in students as Ze'ev ruminates on what and how he will teach Sandy. This is brought to greater fruition as we experience her first lesson. The expositionary dialogue is fascinating and internally justified within the story, at no point detracting from the flow of the story.
It's a damn shame that the next book isn't already out because this one absolutely leaves the reader wanting more, and impatient too.
- Reviewed in the United States on July 10, 2022John Baltisberger’s second dive into the Book of Ze’ev is a perfect mix of mythology, pulpy noir storytelling, and splatterpunk inspired action scenes.
Soon after the events of the first book, Ze’ev is tasked with taking in an apprentice and teaching her about the world unseen to the majority of the population. While struggling with his own relationship, teaching a child about the ways of Jewish mysticism, and dealing with the aftermath of last book’s necromancers, a new threat raises its furry head. An old legend comes back and begins stalking and killing the children of Ze’ev’s Jewish community.
Baltisberger’s genre defying writing shines brightest in the Ze’ev series. The action sequences are the biggest highlight in the series. No punches are pulled as monsters and man alike are pushed to the brink of death and beyond. For fans of extreme horror, there are even a few gory scenes that stand out and are guaranteed to make you wince.
The book isn’t all fights all the time though. Character building is a huge part of the Book of Ze’ev series. I enjoyed reading the natural interactions between all of the people in Ze’ev’s life, as well as getting to know his true thoughts about the people he cared for.
- Reviewed in the United States on December 12, 2023This one hit a bit different than the first. It was still a ton of fun to read but had a much darker tone. Anyone looking for some urban fantasy that isn't the usual fair this is your book.
- Reviewed in the United States on November 22, 2021This is the second in the Book of Ze'ev series, and it is just as excellent as the first entry, Treif Magic. One of the things I like most about the series is that it's not just about the story, but there are also philosophical and spiritual questions that are wrestled with by the protagonist. These detours give great depth to the character of Ze'ev and the battles he is waging, within and without. Mr. Baltisberger uses his considerable knowledge of the Jewish faith to great effect. The story itself is also propulsive and engaging, taking twists I didn't expect. I would love to see a content provider like Netflix turn this into a mini-series. In the meantime though, pick this fine blend of horror and noir up with my highest recommendation!
